BIVALENT BOOSTERS

What you need to know.

The FDA approved two new bivalent boosters from Moderna and Pfizer on September 1, 2022. The Hawaiʻi Department of Health, as well as local pharmacies and community health centers have placed orders and the new boosters should soon be available across the state.

What’s different about these boosters?

The bivalent boosters protect against the original COVID variant, as well as the newer Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 variants that account for 4% and 91% of COVID cases in Hawaiʻi respectively. In other words, these boosters offer better protection against the variants of COVID that we have in our state right now.

Who should get a bivalent booster?

Anyone who is twelve or older who previously completed a primary series of COVID-19 vaccines and/or have had booster(s) is eligible to receive a bivalent booster, as long as it’s been at least two months since they last received a booster or vaccine. Children under the age of twelve are not yet eligible for a bivalent booster.

Which bivalent booster should I get?

Adults 18 and over can get either the Moderna or Pfizer bivalent booster. Children ages 12 to 18 may get the Pfizer bivalent booster.
